Have you ever wondered regarding the various TM settings and their significance?
We have added two TMs for purpose of illustration. In general, the TM which is added first would be updated (i.e., ‘Update’ would be ticked) while for the second TM onwards it will not be ticked by default. TMs are ordered by priority to determine the order in which TM suggestions are made (topmost TM has the highest priority). Search priority can be changed using the ‘up’ and ‘down’ arrows.
Typical scenarios for choosing various options are:
Enabled: You can uncheck this option if you do not wish temporarily to use a particular TM for the current project.
Lookup: This will show fuzzy matches/other matches in Translation Results window for a particular TM. Untick this option if the quality of TM is not of high quality whereas the translation of specialised term could be useful for concordance search (typically the case wherein an in-house non-native engineer has translated a specification sheet for internal use – sentence construction may be poor but translation of specialised terms may be correct).
Penalty: If multiple TMs are added, you can assign a penalty of around 2% to TMs with potentially lower quality TUs or very old TMs so that TUs from such TMs are not automatically considered as 100% matches.
Concordance: Untick this option if you do not wish to do concordance search from a TM of potentially lower quality TUs yet wish to do a look-up so that you have the opportunity to edit the TU in case it is a high-frequency/higher-match TU.
Update: You would typically update your TM and not the client reference TM.
Priority: You would typically have the client reference TM at the top (with ‘Update’ not selected) and then the other TMs with relevant options ticked / unticked depending on the desired search result scenario.
